The Myth of the "No-Break" Creative
When I swapped the corporate grind for the studio, I swallowed a beautiful, dangerous lie: If you love what you do, you don’t need a break.
I convinced myself that every hour away from the wood panels, creating, posting, or visiting galleries was an unjustified failure of momentum, and "time off" was strictly reserved for life-admin.
Then, a close friend essentially staged a polite home invasion, inviting herself to stay for a couple of days.
My initial thought? Ah, there goes my studio time.
My actual reality? It was exactly the circuit-breaker I didn't know I was desperate for. Turns out, being an artpreneur doesn't make you immune to burnout. It just makes you better at disguising it as passion. As it happened, laughter, deep chats about everything and nothing, long walks and even longer pub lunches, were exactly what the doctor ordered.
Sometimes, it takes a brilliant friend to crash your studio and force you to realise that you can't paint anything meaningful simply on fumes... from paints and brush cleaners!
So, here's to those brilliant saboteurs in our lives. May your friends always be loud, your pub lunches long, and your boundaries beautifully bypassed when you need it most.
